What’s your summer reading?

Okay, everyone, what are you reading this summer as you sit on the beach, or your deck, or the subway on the way to work?  Are you caught up in Dragon Tattoo mania?  Wishing for another Twilight?  Tackling something heavier, such as Death With Interruptions in honor of the passing of the great Jose Saramago recently?  (If you think you’ve never heard of the admittedly-obscure Saramago, you should know that one of his novels was made into a fairly mainstream film recently.)  What makes for good summer reading anyway?

I’ll start.  I just finished Beginner’s Greek, James Fallows’ first novel, which for me is appropriate beach reading.  It’s sort of a comedy of manners with the requisite mix-ups and misunderstandings, set in modern-day New York.  Next I’m on to Let the Great World Spin, another novel set in New York–this time in the 70s–which is said to be very uplifting and joyous in its conclusion, which sounds nice to me.

So what about you?  What are you reading–and avoiding–this summer?
